CODA's Research & Policy Reports
Documenting patterns of violence, identifying systemic gaps, and advancing evidence-informed solutions for prevention and reform.
The Coalition to Oppose Domestic Abuse (CODA) conducts research at the intersection of violence, trauma, and system response, with a focus on how patterns of abuse are experienced in practice and interpreted within institutional frameworks. This work centers on identifying risk, understanding escalation, and examining how existing systems respond to complex, evolving dynamics—particularly in post-separation and system-involved contexts.
Grounded in pattern recognition and system-level analysis, CODA’s research integrates case-based insight with interdisciplinary frameworks across law, public health, and behavioral science. The findings are designed to inform policy, strengthen institutional decision-making, and support more accurate, coordinated responses in environments where assessment and intervention directly impact safety outcomes.
Trauma-Responsive Intervention Model for Violence Prevention (2026)
This report presents a structured analysis of coercive control, litigation abuse, and violence prevention within a trauma-responsive framework. It examines how patterns of abuse persist beyond separation and re-emerge within legal systems, often outside traditional definitions of risk.
The findings identify consistent indicators of escalation, including stalking, post-separation aggression, and system-level misclassification of coercive behavior. This work is intended to support more accurate risk assessment, strengthen institutional response, and inform policy development in high-risk cases.
The Intersecting Crises of Trauma and Incarceration (2025)
This report examines the relationship between trauma and justice system involvement, reframing incarceration through the lens of lived experience, developmental exposure, and systemic response. It explores how early adversity, sustained trauma, and lack of intervention contribute to long-term system involvement.
The analysis identifies consistent pathways linking trauma exposure to behavioral outcomes that are often misinterpreted within traditional frameworks. This work is intended to support more informed policy, expand the use of trauma-responsive approaches, and improve outcomes across correctional and reentry systems.
Gun Violence Report (2024)
This report provides a focused analysis of gun violence across Michigan, examining its intersection with domestic violence, youth impact, and community-level risk. It moves beyond isolated incidents to identify broader patterns of access, escalation, and systemic gaps that contribute to both fatal and non-fatal outcomes.
The findings underscore the role of firearm access as a critical factor in the severity and lethality of violence, particularly in domestic contexts. This analysis is intended to inform prevention strategies, strengthen policy and enforcement approaches, and support more coordinated responses to reduce risk and improve public safety outcomes.
